What happens in Peyronie's disease?

Peyronie's disease is recognized by a plaque, or tough lump, which types on the erection tissues of the penis. However, this plaque is benignant (or non-cancerous) and frequently will begin as an inflammatory reaction that could develop into a fibrous tissue. In most of the cases, once the disease mends within just 1 year or more, that plaque does not improve beyond an initial inflammatory stage. But, when the disease persists for many years, the plaque often turns out to be hard, fibrous tissue, and calcium mineral deposits might form.
